“The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man.” (Or woman) This quote from Winston Churchill resonates with me. Wether riding one, grooming, feeding or just drinking in their energy and beauty, I feel more alive somehow. Growing up on a North Dakota farm put me in touch with the work team and I rode bareback a lot. As I grew up I would have
occasion to ride and always to draw horses. When I graduated I went to college with the intent of becoming an art teacher. After rearing my family I am now back on that path, at least drawing horses and studying art. I am always asked where my ideas come from and I think that early years spent with a drafting pen in one hand and a needle in the other
led me down the path to my abstract style. Years of using a pen in minute detail and of making quilts and doing needlepoint generated a love for pattern and color. I find that I can best express the energy of the horse with color, pattern and detail that is representative of the horse but not close photo realism. I prefer to work outside the box
where I can let imagination control what I produce. I like this quote from Degas “It is well to copy what you see; but better to draw what you see in your mind...then your memory and your imagination are freed from the tyranny of nature.”
